Low Vision Center
The Low Vision Center at St. Mary Medical
Center provides FREE services to the Southern California Community
by helping persons with limited vision use their vision to the
fullest potential, and by helping them achieve the greatest degree
of independence possible regardless of the extent of their visual
loss.
Who is Eligible for
Services?
Any individual who receives a written referral
from a licensed eye care practitioner may make an appointment to be
seen by an optical aids counselor. A referral is not
necessary to participate in Braille instruction, activities of
daily living courses, or for use of the electric magnifying
systems.
Optical
Aids
After obtaining as written referral from a
licensed eye care practitioner, the patient telephones the Low
Vision Center for an appointment. During the initial visit to
the Center, an optical aids counselor will assist in selecting
visual aids best suited to the individual's needs. Emphasis
is placed on helping individuals find assistive devices that will
allow them to cope with everyday tasks that have now become
difficult. Reading, writing, watching television, sewing, and
handiwork are examples of activities that may be improved with the
use of optical aids and adaptive techniques. all optical and
non-optical aids issued are non-prescriptive. Follow -up
visits are arranged as needed.
Braille Instruction
Persons expressing an interest in
developing Braille skills are welcome to make an appointment with
the Braille teacher to begin instruction.
Orientation and
Mobility
Clients in need of distance aides receive
initial instruction in the use of aids from an orientations and
mobility specialist. Introduction to cane travel is provided
to legally blind clients upon request. Persons in need of
further instruction are refereed to appropriate resources and
agencies.
Activities of
Daily Living
An independent Living Skills course is
offered on a regular basis to low vision individuals and their
family and friends. Pre-registration is required.
Reading
Devices
Electronic magnifying systems (such as closed
circuit televisions) are available to enlarge printed material up
to 60 times its original size. Use of these devices is by
appointment only.
Speakers
Members of the Low Vision Center staff are
available to speak on a variety of topics related to low
vision. Groups are organizations should contact the Low
Vision Center for further information.
