St. Mary Medical Center’s Gastrointestinal Laboratory is a fully functioning diagnostic and interventional department with specialty in three main procedures: EGD, ERCP, and colonoscopy. The GI Lab is state-of-the-art with a recently upgraded network system and investment in top-of-the line high definition scope technology, including blue light imaging, which aids dramatically in the visualization, diagnostic and interventional aspects of gastrointestinal care.
The Gastrointestinal Services Laboratory is open to outpatient appointments Monday-Friday 7 am - 4 pm. Once a patient receives a referral for a GI consult from their primary doctor, they can schedule an appointment through the GI physician’s office.
Upon arrival at St. Mary Medical Center, patients must register at the Admitting Department, which is located near the hospital’s Main Lobby entrance. From there, patients can check in at the GI Lab, located off the main lobby, near the hospital’s Gift Shop.
The GI staff receives the patient; prepares them for the procedure to be performed, recovers them after the procedure is completed and gives education, resources and any other materials regarding appropriate care post-procedure.
ERCP- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) enables the physician to diagnose problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas.
EGD- Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is an examination of the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and upper duodenum with a small camera (flexible endoscope) which is inserted down the throat.
Colonoscopy- the endoscopic examination of the colon and the distal part of the small bowel with a CCD camera or a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus. It may provide a visual diagnosis (ulcers, polyps) and grants the opportunity for biopsy or removal of suspected lesions.
St. Mary has three functioning procedure rooms within the GI Lab and a fully functioning travel cart for inpatient bedside cases. Our holding room includes 7 beds where we prep and recover for patient procedures.
