Embajadoras de Santa Maria
This program has trained 50 local Latino
women in a variety of health and wellness issues and provides a
modest stipend/incentive to encourage them to go back into the
community and share their knowledge with others.
Upon completion of the program,
Embajadoras (ambassadors) perform a minimum of ten hours
of volunteer job experience each month and become lay community
health educators. The Embajadoras have been
recognized at the Nuestra Imagen awards for their work in
improving the health of the community.
The women designed their own mission
statement in Spanish which translates to "The Embajadoras de
Santa Maria are a group of women who are mothers, wives,
daughters, and concerned persons about our community who are being
trained to educate and aid the community. Though our
participation with the Embajadoras, we are empowering ourselves to
continue to educate ourselves, our children, and our
community."
The program has empowered Spanish-speaking
women to educate their sister circles about access issues and has
provided job skills/experience through volunteer opportunities.
